IWC Aquatimer Chronograph “Expedition Jacques-Yves Cousteau” IW376805

The IWC Aquatimer Chronograph “Expedition Jacques-Yves Cousteau” Ref. IW376805 is a special-edition dive chronograph created to honor legendary oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, whose films and expeditions helped introduce the world to underwater exploration. Part of IWC’s modern Aquatimer lineup, the watch features a 44 mm stainless-steel case paired with a distinctive deep blue dial, a color traditionally used on Cousteau-themed Aquatimer models to evoke the ocean. The dial includes three chronograph sub-dials, luminous hands and hour markers for underwater readability, and a day-date display at 3 o’clock. The caseback is engraved with an image of Cousteau wearing his signature red cap, reinforcing the model’s tribute to his legacy and IWC’s support of marine conservation projects.

Technically, the watch is built as a serious dive instrument. It uses IWC’s SafeDive system, which links an external rotating bezel to an internal dive-time ring to prevent accidental extension of dive time—an important safety feature. Inside is the IWC Calibre 79320 automatic movement, beating at 28,800 vph with approximately 44 hours of power reserve. The watch is protected by sapphire crystal, fitted to a black rubber strap with quick-change system, and rated to 300 m (30 bar) water resistance, making it suitable for professional diving.

About IWC

The International Watch Company (IWC) has a rich history dating back to 1868 when American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones founded the company in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Jones aimed to combine advanced American manufacturing techniques with the skilled craftsmanship of Swiss watchmakers. Despite initial challenges, IWC quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality pocket watches and, later, wristwatches.

Throughout the 20th century, IWC was a force of innovation and expand its repertoire accordingly. In the 1930s, they introduced their first pilot's watches, which would become an enduring part of their identity. During World War II, IWC produced these watches for both civilian and military use. The post-war period saw the introduction of iconic collections like the Ingenieur in 1955 and the Aquatimer in 1967. In the 1970s, IWC collaborated with Ferdinand A. Porsche to create the first watch with a built-in compass. The company's commitment to technical innovation and classic design has persisted into the 21st century, with IWC remaining a respected name in luxury watchmaking.
